Context

Mining company with about 3,200 direct employees, two open-pit mines and a processing plant, with communities living close to operations. Dam governance was robust; the rest of the ESG agenda was spread across departments without coordination.

Challenge

Investors and lenders began asking for climate targets and comparable social metrics. The sustainability report was assembled at year-end from spreadsheets across departments, and local communities complained about unkept promises.

Lessons

What this case teaches

  • Excellence on one front, such as dams, does not carry over to the rest of the agenda on its own.
  • Doing less with defined budgets was more credible than many small programs.
  • With communities, keeping to the calendar mattered more than the size of the investment.
